Making luck

All organisations need a Bull’s Eye. Two years ago I set mine for 2008 as ten paid overseas speaking engagements to executive audiences. In order to actually hit the Bull’s Eye you sometimes need to have a little creativity, some courage, and a slice of luck.

This summer I was attending a speakers’ convention in San Diego. The largest CEO development organisation in the world is based there and I needed to create an opportunity to present our Bull’s Eye model whilst in town.

It took a bit of courage to approach the potential new client, but I did so armed with absolute belief in the material. However, I had not had a reply to my letter before leaving the UK.

So what about luck? On the plane from San Francisco I sat next to an unshaven, casual looking guy in tatty jeans. But he was reading the Wall Street Journal. Half an hour later I discovered that he just happened to be sharing the platform at an Economic Forum in San Diego with the very person I needed to meet, in two days time.

Lucky? Of course. Do your creativity and courage bits first, then providence will sometimes lend a hand.
